Note: Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) is made up of three elements:
- Stable Internet connection (25+ Mps)
- Subscription to a Live Streaming TV Service,
- Streaming Media Device/ Smart TV.
Assuming you already have a Stable Internet Connection you are about to acquire the second element – your subscription to a Live Streaming TV Service.
For the third element, if you don’t currently own a streaming media device such as an Amazon Fire TV Stick, Streaming Media Device, or a recent model Smart TV don’t worry. We have a few recommendations on our Media Devices page.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recommends download and upload internet speeds of 12-25 Mbps for families with multiple internet users or for frequent online streaming. This may vary depending on your household’s needs and devices.
Depending on what kind of streaming you’ll be doing, the internet speed needed might change. For example, streaming Spotify music will require less speed than streaming videos or shows. In general, to stream most videos in standard definition, you’ll need download speeds of at least 3 Mbps. You need at least 25 Mbps for 4K streaming video on your computer or Ultra HD-enabled devices. Some streaming services suggest faster speeds, such as Fubo TV, which suggests minimum speeds of 40 Mbps. For Netflix, on the other hand, the minimum internet speed recommended for streaming is 3 Mbps, but recommended speeds vary by the quality you want to view.
- To stream videos in standard definition, at least 3 Mbps is recommended.
- To stream videos in HD, at least 5 Mbps is recommended.
- To stream videos in HDR or 4K, at least 25 Mbps is recommended.
